From May 16 to 20, 2007 the IRFF has organized a visit of a group of Korean and Japanese volunteers to the Zhytomir region as part of the “Volunteers – peacemakers” program.
One of the main directions of the Fund’s activities is the development and popularization of volunteer activities in Ukraine, therefore the program during the volunteers’ stay was aimed at volunteer activity. While in the Zhytomir region, the volunteers from Korea and Japan have visited different towns in Zhytomir region where they have participated in social projects and in mass actions, and have also visited historical sites and museums, and met with the representatives of volunteer groups and organizations from around Zhytomir.
On May 16 together with the Zhytomir city Center of family, children and youth social service we have held activities in the “Call” rehabilitation center which operates in cooperation with the city hospital. We have organized a program for the children who are getting treated in the center. The program included games and contests, as well as getting acquainted with Japanese and Korean traditions through songs and dances. At the end of the program the Fund has offered the center necessary tools for treatment.

On this day the volunteers had the opportunity to visit the “S. P. Korolyov” astronautics museum where they have become familiar with the interesting exposition of the museum’s exhibits.
On May 17 the volunteers have visited school #3 and #4 in Radomyshl town. A cultural exchange program between Ukrainian and foreign volunteers was held during the visit. The volunteers have also shared their experience on holding projects in Ukraine, as well as abroad and have visited the Flora and fauna museum of Radomyshl forestry.

On May 18 a project for cleaning the Kutuzov park was held in Volodar-Volynskyi town. Local volunteers have shared with the guests the methods through which they are promoting a health lifestyle and are conducting a prophylaxis of negative phenomenon in society. The guests were able to share their country’s culture through dances and songs. All the volunteers have visited the Mineralogical museum where they could see with their own eyes the rocks obtained in Ukraine and abroad and hear an explanation about the methods of obtaining rock and its characteristics. |

The same day, upon arrival back to Zhytomir, a meeting of the volunteers with the Secretary of the Zhytomir local council Mr. Kalensky A. Z. was held. Representatives of local media were present too. The volunteers related about their activities and Mr. Kalensky expressed his gratitude for their support and development as well as his desire for future collaboration.

On May 19 the volunteers participated in a mass action “Race for the sake of living” organized by the Novograd-Volinskyi social service city center. They have participated in the event along with local volunteers and residents. After the action the volunteers had the possibility to get a closer acquaintance with Ukrainian history by visiting the house museum of the famous Ukrainian writer Lesya Ukrainka.

On May 20 a social project was held in the “Chaika” summer camp. It was organized together with the Andryushivsk city center of social service. Together with the city volunteers the quests have cleaned and painted the dancing ground as well as the central lines of the camp for the children who will join the camp in the summer to feel better. After the project the staff of the Social Service Center has organized a game-like training program aimed at promoting children’s rights in which all the volunteers participated with pleasure.

During the projects, ceremonies for establishing friendship relationships between local volunteers and guests were held. At the ceremonies we exchanged certificates and addresses. This will help the future development of our relations and exchange between Ukraine’s youth and youth from other countries. Every time the moments of parting were filled with sadness, but the work which was done gave everyone the hope for future meetings and communication. |
